Richard Avedon Research
Richard Avedon was an American fashion and portrait photographer. Since he died in 2004 - his main work was throughout the 1900's. Avedon was very famous for his portraits - for example the portraits of Marilyn Monroe. In all of his photograph's I have selected here it shows that the model is the main focus - the background is dull and non-existent. There are no identifying objects that can suggest where these portraits were taken. All the photograph's I have displayed only show their shoulders and up - although I did see a few that was a portrait of their whole body.
His portraits were also all in black and white - I like this because you focus more on the facial expressions of the model rather than trying to gain emotion from the colours. You can clearly see that these pictures weren't made in this era. However, you can see one of the photograph's I have chose (top middle) could have been taken in the 2000. The hat and hair style give it away. I believe the main point of Richard having taken these photo's was to express feelings through their facial expressions. Richard has not used Photoshop on his photographs as it was made in 1988. Although I do believe that because these portraits were planned he did have some equipment - such as lighting. The lights Richard have used enhanced his images. For example, the bottom left clearly shows a lot of shadow. The light was clearly on the right of the model.
If I do portraits I would like to put some of Richard's ideas into my own photographs. For example I believe that the black and white part is good - however, some might be in colour. I also like how he has used his lighting to highlight certain aspects of the model.
